Matt. 3:1, 5 says, “In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,
Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,”
Matt. 20:16 says, “So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.”
Brethren, we should realize that not all that are called will eventually make it to heaven at the end of this life. For sure, some will make it while many others would not make it because some of the called rejected the counsel of the Lord and entangled themselves with the world to the detriment of their soul.
2Timothy 4:10 says, “For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia.”
This man Demas was once a disciple but he later joined the world. He was called, but he backslid. I want you to understand that some people in the church, who may be saying they have calling may truly have been called but through their lifestyles have rejected the calling to the detriment of their soul. They were called but they later missed out. They unconsciously rejected their election because of their lifestyle, careless living and the Lord rejected them as a result.
Hebrews 12:16-17 says, “Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.”
Esau lived a careless life, he sold his birth-right to Jacob and when it was time for him to be blessed, he lost it to Jacob and missed it entirely. And so many are called but few chosen because of carelessness.
Many Christians are careless, they do not understand their left from their right, even though, they may be preaching, teaching, Pastors working miracles, workers in the church or even members of the church, yet on the last day due to carelessness they will all miss out.
They are missing out because they never bothered about holiness, about the iniquities in their lives yet kept on moving forward. All such people shall be disappointed on the last day when they shall be told ‘Depart from me, ye that work iniquity, I never knew you’. Remember, Judas was among the called but he missed out because he was covetous, a thief.
Being one of the twelve originally, Judas was called, ‘but due to unmindfulness, and carelessness, and evil of iniquity in his heart, he sold Christ and was later to miss heaven. Eventually he was cast into hell.
A. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CHOSEN
The Chosen ones are those who have repented of their sins and have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and personal Saviour. They no longer have any business with sin, with compromise, with unrighteousness, with iniquity. They have surrendered their lives to Jesus Christ and are conscious of the scripture that says in 2Cor. 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” They follow peace with all men and holiness knowing that without these in their lives, they cannot see God. They do not condone sin in their lives. These are the Chosen ones.
John 1:12 says, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:”
Possessing of the power to live holy, these ones already have their names written in heaven. The Chosen ones are those who are worshipping God in Spirit and in truth, those walking on the narrow path.
Yes. The Chosen ones worship God in Spirit and in truth for such are the ones the Lord seeks. These people worship God with all their hearts devoid of flesh, iniquity, compromise, hypocrisy, etc.
The Chosen ones run away from evil because they fear the Lord. They do not follow the multitude to commit sin or do evil in the secret or open.
Such ones search for the Lord with all their hearts without reservation. In John 2:15-17, the scripture says that the Chosen ones love Jesus Christ, for the things of God is never in doubt. They worship Him day and night and obey Him totally because they know it is better to do so.
1Samuel 15:22-23 says, “And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.”
You see it, these people know very well that obedience to the word of God is better than sacrifice. When you spot these people in the church that keep to His words, mark them, they are Chosen.
Christ came into the world to do the will of God. May I ask, so many of you that are saying ‘I am a Chosen’ are you doing the will of God? The Chosen ones will do the will of God at all times
These people we are talking about are conscious of the spiritual blessings, the virtues of Christ which are the hallmarks of the Chosen ones. Certainly it is not every one that says he or she is a Chosen is really a Chosen, they may all be called but few chosen. These people, because of the nature of their service to God, believed that their rewards are in heaven and that the Lord will also bless them richly on earth.
These ones understand the teaching, and so they go on laying treasures above where no thieves can tamper with them. They understand the teaching that says ‘What shall it profit a man if you gains the whole world and loses your soul?’
Brethren, whatever a man sows that shall he also reap. The Chosen ones take time, I mean real time to minister to the people, as a result they have mansions awaiting them on arrival in heaven. This is the assurance.
John 14:1-3 says, “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”
Maybe there is a little inconvenience now as a result of your working for the Lord but He says ‘do not be bothered because there is a huge reward in the end awaiting you’.
Only those who are Chosen indeed will take this ‘inconvenience’ way. Many are called but few are Chosen, there are many Pastors, evangelists, churches, etc but few are chosen.
2Tim. 2:19 says, “Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”
Are you a Chosen? Depart from iniquity. Exodus 23:21 says, “Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him.”
If you be a real Chosen then you must not be seen to be doing the same things with those whom you are trying to bring to Christ, for “there is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death” Proverbs 16:25,
The goodness of God leads to repentance, do not think that because you have this and that, then it is all you need. Many are called but few chosen.
B. OUR LESSON AND RESPONSE
We have learnt that the Chosen ones are few in the midst of the multitudes in the whole world. The word of God says that ‘many are called but few chosen’.
In the days of Noah, God selected him and his household because they were conscious and mindful of righteousness. If you want to be among the few chosen then you must be conscious and mindful of righteousness ready to obey the totality of the word of God.
Some ignorant people may be asking ‘ah can God take some people in Nigeria and destroy the others?’ Yes, He will do it if we are unmindful and careless about righteousness.
Only Noah and his household were found to be living right, he was spared but the rest of his generation then were destroyed. So, if there is only one person God finds in Nigeria that is living right, He will spare that person and destroy the others. There is need for you to begin to live right so that when the trumpet sounds you will be among those raptured in Jesus name.
What about Lot and his family? The Lord excused him and his family during the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. We have also seen and learnt that the Chosen are those who are really born again and are doing the will of God from their hearts, serving God without expecting any reward from men, only interested in storing treasures above. Let this be to your life.
The Chosen obey the totality of the truth and keep to the perfect will of God. They are mindful of spiritual blessings and are not joining the multitudes in the broad-way to hell.
They follow the narrow way as we have seen in Matt. 7:13-14 says, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”
The Lord wants us to begin to practise all these things we have seen and learnt. We have also seen that the ungodly live contrary to the above characteristics of the Chosen. These people are very much unlike those who want to go to heaven, they go on doing evil, compromising their stand and refuse to obey the truth. These people are not Chosen even though some of them might be claiming to be Chosen. They are not, for many are called but few Chosen.
And so, our response to this message is to choose to follow after the lifestyle of the Chosen so as to be in heaven at the end of our lives.
John 8:12 says, “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
Jesus is the light, He has introduced the light by His lifestyle; let us follow after Him, follow after righteousness and holiness. Let us continue to love, fear, serve and please God in all things so that where our Lord Jesus is, there we shall also at the end of our lives.
1Peter 2:9 says, “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
For all sinners and backsliders in Chosen, they must surrender their lives to Jesus Christ and begin to live a holy life devoid of sin.
1John 3:8-10 says, “He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.” A Christian is not a sinner and a sinner is not a Christian.
1John 5:17 says (a) “All unrighteousness is sin”
Anything that is not righteousness is sin. Abstain from all appearance of evil. 1Cor. 6:9-10 says, Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.”
Finally, 1John 5:18 says “We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.” Give your life to Jesus Christ by calling upon the name of the Lord and you will be saved. As you continue to live holy life, fearing, loving serving and worshipping God with all your heart, your name will be written in heaven and you will be Chosen from the many that are called. You are blessed in Jesus name. Amen.
